SUSY – Sucrose Synthase as cost-effective mediator of glycosylation reactions

Time span: September 2013 to August 2017

GALAB participates in the SUSY project funded by the EU with 5 million Euro. During the next four years the project partners of research, universities and companies want to develop efficient processes for the production of glycosylated compounds. Renowned examples of such products are oligosaccharides in breast milk acting as prebiotics and glycosylated flavonoids with improved stability and solubility.
The objective of this project is to optimise the enzymatic processes of glycosyl transferases (GT), saccharose synthase (SuSy) and fructane sucrose (FS) for the efficient and economic production on an industrial scale.

Duration: August 2012 to July 2015

Glycans are complex oligosaccharides usually bound to proteins (glycoproteins) or present in their free form like in breast milk (prebiotics). The growing number of studies shows the significance of glycans as biotherapeutic, immunomodulators, vaccines and food supplements.

The objective of this cooperation project is the development of a whole cell biocatalysis of glycans using glycosyl transferases with the participation of cofactors. For this purpose glycosyl transferases and cofactors in bacteria will be expressed ruggedly and the cells will be introduced into a fixed bed reactor.

The project is carried out in cooperation with the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg and is sponsored by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (Federal Ministry of Education and Research).

The vision of the cooperation partners is to develop new technologies for glycan biosynthesis and therefore to provide essential and therapeutically relevant oligosaccharides like Lewis X for the biopharmaceutical industry for the development of new drugs and vaccines.

GALAB has many years of experience with the analysis of oligosaccharides and offers you a range of analytical solutions – for example the determination of galacto- and fructo-oligosaccharides (GOS/FOS).

Tools for the detection of novel glyco-biomarkers

Duration: January 2011 to December 2015

The objective of the GlycoBioM project which started in January 2011 is to develop tools for the identification and determination of biomarkers in clinical samples and patients. The project is funded by the seventh framework programme of the European Commission (FP7) and has a duration of 60 months. The project is funded with 5.2 million Euro by the EU.

Alteration of glycosylation patterns of proteins and lipids was observed in various diseases, e.g. cancer. By unravelling these structures it is expected to obtain a series of specific carbohydrate containing biomarkers which can be applied for diagnosis and therapy of diseases. In this project state-of-the-art analysis techniques like LC-MS and arrays are applied to develop multiplex methods for the determination of glyco-biomarkers.

Dr. Jürgen Kuballa
Jürgen Kuballa, born in 1964, studied chemistry at the Universität Köln and concluded his doctoral studies in 1996 at the Technichal University Hamburg-Harburg. He performed the research in the field of analytical chemistry at the GKSS Research Center ind Geesthacht. During his doctoral studies he founded GALAB Labratories GmbH, a company which fate still partly lies in his hands. In 1998 a new biotech company was spun off, GALAB Technologies GmbH that specialises in developing test systesm for glycobiology.

As an expert in glycoanalysis and beyond, he consluts many national and international associations and committies. Since 2000, Dr. Kuballa is a member of the steering committe for the veterinary drugs of the expert circle for the food analytics of German Chemical Society (GdC e.V.).

The reserach goals are oriented towards the development of new innovative proceses for the analysis of residues in the foods.
